she was my best friend ten years ago

cigarette parties in back alleyways
dangling from the lips of an angel;

the one dancing in poisonous vapor.
she’s got a ticket to happiness.

glass bottles, empty cartons
park bench mattresses,

newspaper blankets,
street light-night lights.

it’s a shame about the flies.
it’s a shame about the smell.

oh well, lonely lover,
you will have to save yourself.

(2013)

So in my poetry class, we are working with couplets, which is just a structure, two line stanza's. We didn't have a subject matter so I stole some ideas from a previous poem (A Dance with Smoke) to tell the story about my best friends, best friend who struggles with a heroine addiction and a drinking problem.
