A Seafarer's Tomb

To my beloved sons.

'Twas at twilight dim —
B’neath the waves there came a hymn,
A lustrous chant —daylight’s vale
A shadow perch’d atop her sail.

Her bow betray’d by the absence of light
Her tomb ashore in the dead of night
A biting north-easterly gale
A shadow perch’d atop her sail

Her crew now wan by the chill of fright
Her crew now pallid b’neath —star-light
O’er the wretch’d waters wail
A shadow perch’d atop her sail

Sullen skies and dismal shores
Abed upon the ocean floor —a tomb forevermore!
No soul returned to tell the tale —
A shadow perch’d atop her sail.

Once a year b’neath the waves
Amongst the tombs inside their graves
They rise to play —dance and Hail —
A shadow perch’d atop her sail.
