Brand New Day

So close
Came I

In the neon pain of newer days

So close as I stood, cliffs edge
Turning a ravens eye on potential tombstones
Places where love could be left
To sleep, and die

I went to bury my heart
in the dark wood, beneath the snow
Where the narrow holes I dug revealed the bones of children
and the shattered pottery of dreams
Where even the wind won’t go

So close came I
And were it not for a secret sunrise
the warmth of your sudden wings
I may still hear those whispers
From the vacuum of the lie

But now, as soft as kittens breath
Hope sighs against my cheek
And in this long toothed desert, where the shadows of circling birds
play cruel games in my sleep
Now there is a breeze, strange and new
That kisses the burnt sand and places tears upon the leaves
And moistens my cracked lips
and the drought within my ribcage

So close came I
That now I shudder to think of days without this light
This soft fire that you bring
And I rejoice for the return of miracles, new faces in the clay

Let us feed not the dark, and give our eyes instead to that mango glow
that promise of a brand new day
