Still Not as Sweet

In the golden of past autumns
Carolina in the fall
I have tasted sweet:
Maple syrup, thick as amber
Straight from the sanguine trees, tall and waving in the honeyed wind
And their flavor wrapped around me, in a sticky gold embrace
But still not as sweet as you

I have stood, next to cliffs tall as time
And seen the sun explode into cherry and milk
Seafoam frosted into angel’s breath
And when I remembered who I was, as the sun sank into soft surrender
I was silent, savoring the aftertaste of heaven
But still not as sweet as you

When I count my luck
I can number on one hand these moments of unbearable magic
When stars across the dark ocean aligned
And like sparks, trembled into the edge of everywhere
I was amazed that such as I
Should receive these golden kisses
So soft, like Chinese silk, or morning dew
But not as sweet as you
