Carol

Dear Diary

A lesson in trust

Raised to believe 'kids are to be seen and not heard’
taught me to internalize my own spoken word.
Pent-up feelings became overwhelming and strong,
releasing them on paper helped me accept what felt wrong.
Writing poems & short stories that I placed in a box
were hidden beneath under garments and socks.
I kept those feelings safe and compartmentalized
(you know the ones that you don’t want advertised!)
But those words were created for my eyes not others;
especially, I’ll add, they weren’t meant for my mother’s!
While I was at school, she violated my space,
an action which made her fall further from grace.
It isn’t healthy, she said, tossing them with persistence.
I pleaded they were mine with tearful resistance.
I lost that battle... an emotional crash.
Never recovering my expressions that were deemed as trash.
