Nearby to a riverbed
under the shadows of the night
was a string of gumnuts,
illuminated by moonlight
Now upon approaching
the still water by the river
a young girl going walkabout,
something made her shiver
It was not the cold night air
or the gumtrees in the wind
it was the coloured lily pads
and the way they seemed to spin
She was uncertain why
they were dancing in the light
she did not know how lilies
could look like they were in flight
She didn’t want to question,
she did not overthink
in case they stopped or disappeared,
she did not even blink
All night she stood by watching
the lilies moving magic
no one else would ever see
she thought it oh so tragic.
