Three Months in 1957

She was so tender,
So loving, so giving,
Both virgins, such sweetness,
Meeting in that front room
In her sister’s house
For three months in 1957.
No sex, just hugs and kisses,
Enclosed in her warmth,
Love and innocence, caresses,
Just themselves, listening
To gramophone records,
Until, thinking of the future,
Society loomed large
Smashing their world
To smithereens - broken,
Each limped away,
He white, she black,
Both looking back
For years after -
Teenagers torn apart
By the world,
Prejudice from both sides.
The pure love he knew
Lives in him still,
Possessor of her heart’s core
His secret store,
His treasure.
Black is beautiful
And white too.
One day we’ll join
The world together.
