"Oregon"

Like waves of the sea,
  The grain fields moved,
Grasping the ambulant eye.
In this place of the beaver,
The lumberjack and weaver;
This place of the Big-Water Sky.

In this place where forests sing
And souls wed eagles to fly
There are rivers that run
Toward the setting sun,
Born of the Big Water Sky.

Near the great sand dunes
The catfish swim
And the salmon are seldom shy.
There are lakes of glass
That harbored the bass
Under the Big Water Sky.

Now the rainy season,
On much of this land,
Is from September through July,
  But that’s why it’s green
And such a wondrous scene;
Under the Big-Water Sky.
