Stay Awhile

I wish you were like
the shells I’ve collected
through the years.

I know they can’t
wash away anymore
but I still keep them
locked up
against those dark
stealing strangers.

But you are like
your multi-colored cat
so damned independent
curling up beside someone
only occasionally.

Walking kitten quietly
to be unnoticed,
but always noticeable.

Well I’m a romantic ally
of dogs and cats alike,
always bending toward them
to stroke them for a tail wag
or a pleasure purr.

I’ve always taken in
the weary strays,
nursing them back
to strength.

And with dark wet eyes
I watch them go their way,
never knowing which of us
will survive.

I pray that you are not
so sudden to strength
but will stay awhile
and curl up beside me.

I’ll keep you warm,
protect you from strangers
and always
always
bring home
a soft surprise.
