A Sunday in the Suburbs

Paul’s in his backyard
on a Sunday afternoon
barbecuing burgers.

His wife and kids are
hungry in the house.
His only company’s

a squirrel dancing
about in a pecan tree
when from the sky

a hawk drops down
and takes the squirrel
without breaking flight.

Paul watches the hawk
and squirrel disappear,
turns his burgers

one more time
and yells to his wife,
“Dinner is served.”
