The Brink part 1

Tattered Princess
With a tarnished crown,
Her heart abused by love
Always being let down.
 No fairy-tale ending
Seems ever in sight,
Happily ever after turns
Into night after night after night.
 Alone in your tower
Ruthlessly guarding your heart.
You made yourself your own prisoner
No one gets through from the start.
 A rider approaches
The barred and chained doors
But the drawbridge is raised
The dragon roars.
 A quite fearsome beast
No one can deny.
Its fire is heartbreak,
Each scale is a lie.
 Its claws are of promises
Broken and jagged.
Its wings were once dreams,
Now threadbare and ragged.
 The lance is raised,
The beast shakes its head
And scatters the bones
Of suitors long dead.
 The battle is joined,
The dust starts to rise
As you watch from your window
With hurt hardened eyes.
 Every weapon I own
Brought to bear in the fray.
The battle it rages
Through all night and day.
 Each lance is broken,
The sword dulled and bent.
The shield torn asunder,
The armor is rent.
 The guardian you created
Knows its job too well,
So if I cannot take you to heaven,
I will join you in hell.
I sit astride the beast now,
Its fire burns my soul
As I stare out at the Wasteland
With eyes grown dead and cold.
And upon a blackened branch nearby,
There hangs a fraying rope.
The only kind of end in sight
For the Knight of Shattered Hope.
