Collecting memories

Do we both know this must end?
Is that why we’re collecting memories?
Living the present for the sake of the future
Reliving the moments before they’ve even happened

My collection’s growing daily
Each encounter adds a new set of prints
To flick through at a later date
When you’ve gone and I’m alone

Capturing your words, your touches, your emotions
If I write them down they must have been real
It seems like this isn’t really happening
One day it must sink in

Every moment with you
Polished and perfected in my mind
Snatches of time immortalised
Returned to time and again

Each word you’ve written
Is etched into my memory
I can recite them all
And never lose the thrill

I know so little of you so well
I doubt my brain could cope
If I was ever to know you
The way I want to know you

You’re doing the same I can tell
Every time you quote me back at me
The detail, the way you notice
The little things I do and say

Collecting memories
Gathering up precious moments
Reminders of each other
For when they’re all we’ll have
