Sonnet CXX:

CXX

The dreary shadows round my heart tonight
May be a gloom forecasting coming ill;
The shuddering tremors which my spirit thrill,
May be Death’s footfall, just beyond my sight.
The lucid windows that admit the light
Upon my soul, are dimmed, as if the chill
Of outer winter wrought its frosty will
Against the vision of the inner sprite.
I see not clearly; but, O dusky shade,
Whether thy steps be near me or afar,
I have but little thou canst make or mar.
Spare but one thing amidst this life’s parade,
To bless my eyes, as earthly glories fade—
Spare me the comfort of Love’s guiding star.
