Friars Crag

After the evening meal
the young couple took a stroll
walking closely hand in hand
raptured within each others soul

The sky is a lovely shade of blue
as the sun’s just gone down
with the cloud fading in the distance
it’s so quiet away from the town

As they reach Friars Crag
ready to sit down there
to look across the Derwent Water
peace instils them having no care

The ducks swim across the bay
living a life so full and free
this scene to hold and keep
money can’t buy they both agree

Later darkness will come
the light will be gone
both be tucked up in bed
to awake tomorrow at dawn

(2014)

Friars Crag is a promontory jutting into Derwent Water near Keswick on a stretch of shore about half a mile from the boat landing stages. Ruskin described the view as one of the three most beautiful scenes in Europe. There is an easy path suitable for wheelchairs from the boat landings, with clear views over to Derwent Isle, and across the lake to Brandlehow Woods, the first property acquired by the National Trust in the Lake District.

Friars Crag achieved its name because it was believed to be the embarkment point for monks making a pilgrimage to St Herbert’s Island, located south west of the crag.
