something about shoes

nearly a year since those tentative steps;
settling into new shoes, tying them tight,
our heels nestling in nicely to brand new
habits like old haunts. intending them to
last, until the last. we’ll re-sole them if
we need to, we’ll sew on new buckles if
they become slack. you need nothing more when
you know it’s just right; frayed laces on old
trainers feel just as safe. safer, still, no
matter the direction we’ll co-author
each stride. just like the start; somewhat timid,
even calculated, tiptoes, turning
to the poor-postured, cross-legged comfort
we’ll enjoy for the longest time to come.
