A Window Open in Winter

There are some things terrible in nature,
Things that are prone to suck the warmth
From the hearthstone of any family,
To harden their hearts against the breeze,
And to freeze their tongues within their cheeks.
From these, they spew their words
That clot their love, wrought with disease.
But those who can see, and writers like me,
Have fought the good fight,
Dreamt and slept through the long night
That brought us to our knees.
It is those of us who’ve seen,
And the few that have been,
Who, truly, at the end know,
There is nought in the world like,
In the winter, an open window.
