(1)
Under an open window
I gaze out until the wonder is gone.
Having run out of questions I fall silent,
but perk up when a stray cat appears.
(2)
After a long day of work,
I walk the mail up the driveway.
Stopping, and turning around—
Two eyes question another hungry dusk.
(3)
A lone leaf scammers across the driveway,
a simple ‘Thank You’ is all I can utter.
The room filled with smoke,
too drunk for zazen,
too drunk to cry.
(4)
Sitting at my desk I am surprised
to find my reflection in the window
when I look up.
We spend a long time together in silence.
