Tempest

We all want others to share our same experience.
It is a unifying human quality, yet
It is also one of the cruelest.
We demand our pain be felt.
Asserting our right for your cognizance and sympathy
That you, too may know our trials,
Our tribulations.
Knowing all too well the grief this will bring
The wave of remorse crashing down upon
Those unfortunate enough to be near,
Consuming body and mind.

Yet in the end we abstain.
We swallow this temptation
To release these worries like a tempest
Upon the helpless bystander.
We contain the storm.
Striving forward, head held aloft,
We meet each day.
We feign a smile.
