Childhood

I watch her jumping rope and playing hopscotch in her backyard.

It’s strange to me to be an outsider looking in.

You were exactly what I never wanted when I had you,

but now there are days when I wish I could bring you back.

You left before we could say goodbye,

but you wouldn’t have recognized me, and it wouldn’t have mattered.

I changed, people changed, time passed by, but I’ve always missed you.

You gave me many things to be grateful for,

but that doesn’t mean I don’t wonder “what if”..

What if you had stayed for just five minutes longer?

Who would I have been? And where would you have taken me?

I smile because I know what I have, but I cry sometimes because I didn’t get to have it all.

I watch her jumping rope and playing hopscotch in her backyard.

It’s strange to me to be an outsider looking in.
