My Kindly Held hand

Just before waking
A woman in black
Gently took my hand
In a kindly way
As I crossed a road

Misread as pity
I let it fall free
She took it again
And then smiled for me
Before dawn took her

Then in the half– light
I read the message
Carried by that hand
And it stung my eyes
“I need to go now”
