A Tragic Tale

How hard is it to write in formal verse?
In sonnet form with proper metre?
A few short words written in reverse
A rhythm that must not be let peter
And a story, usually of love
Often of sadness and of pain thought lost
Invoking a spirit, watching above
In hatred of love proved star crossed
And thus I write a tale of tragedy
A terrible song of woe and distress
On how I had to leave a cup of tea
It pains me truly to write and confess
That such beauty in milk and tea leaf
Did not in fact pass beyond my teeth

Yes, I did notice the second line only has nine syllables. The irony of that miscount amused me, so I kept it.
