Diamond

Come now, don’t tell me to shine like a diamond
It’s cliché for one, and false for a second
Must I really quote the dictionary at you?
Yes I will be 'that guy’.
Is it so bad I like to be correct?
I don’t have a choice I’m hardwired that way
You cheer me up just talking to me,
Calling me charming makes me blush
More like a peach than a diamond
I will go off after all
Let’s clarify it once and for all shall we?
To shine (verb) is to emit light, to produce one’s own.
I don’t want to just be a diamond,
reflecting everyone else’s shine.
I want my own light
I want to be the glass jar trapping the fireflies
Like the butterflies of love
but so vibrant that my feelings
are seen through my mask,
the energy saving lightbulb
that clicks and brightens steadily
slowly lightening a room for longer
Making as little a damaging impact as possible
Let me be the lighthouse searching
For lost souls and warning them
From the rocks and the pains
Perhaps I could be a shine (noun)
The gloss of your hair as it dazzles in the sun
Or the tin foil on the baking tray
Soaking the fat so that you don’t have to
Maybe I could be the diamond’s shine then
But I’d need a diamond
