Tabletop

A table, covered in bills and books
A bowl of cereal scattered cables
And mugs of tea, coffee and
I’m out of orange juice
Missing screws and balancing badly
I’ll move a bit later and return with
A tabletop, misnamed after a lap
That would be crushed if attempted
Might move for a shower and consider
The words and pages on the books
And screens about me
Sometimes I move for a walk
Around the lake and looking at the clouds
And the goose droppings by my feet
And a squirrel if I’m lucky
but always I return
to my books and cables and screens
I’d return to our bed and bring tea
With one and a half sugars
I’d weaned it down over time
In more ways than that it seems
But you’re not there now so I guess
I can’t face just going to bed
The table then
back to the screens
back to the books
