The Pursuit of Happiness

Happiness is an elusive beast
it is best not to pursue it
through foliage and fen
You’ll never catch sight of it that way

Instead, wait in darkness and bait it
with dreams and opportunities
wait for it to snuffle out of the light
and gently lick the laid out lies

Then shoot.
A quick shot to the head
and it lies dead
But the game is over then

A slower means
is to shoot the tendon
of the lower left leg
forcing it to flee

Follow the trail of blood
devouring it as you go
hold bitterness close
as a suitable garnish

Bled out, collapsed
a drained and hollow thing
no time for a fire
crouch and bare your teeth

Mind the strings of fat
as the yet warm flesh
slides down your throat,
don’t gag on the hair

Look at the beast and ignore
the missing flesh
on your own body
A glutton for punishment
