Burning Olive Trees in Palestine

The two whirling white clouds of smoke collided.

One soft and sweet from burning olive trees.

The other harsh and irritating from tear gas canisters.

The billowing smoke choked out Palestinian smiles.

But only for the moment where breath be hard to find.

In the smoke with a Palestinian,

look to their eyes when a smile is stolen.

Their eyes cry a fire of hope and a will to survive.

Brave a moment to live in smoke with a Palestinian who smiles.

Stay long enough to see their eyes.
