This was inspired by a news story I'd heard about a mother killing her children in order to protect them from the apocalypse, afterward she killed herself. I could picture a mother singing this to her child, covered in dirt and ash, sitting in an abandoned building holding a knife as she rocks the child to sleep one last time.
