I told the sunset about you

By Keyla Chongo

Last night the window was open and so was my heart but there was no one to listen
I stuck my head out of the window and tried to tell the moon
But he was to weary to listen
The next morning I woke up and tried to tell the sun
But she was too busy to listen
I waited for the evening as the day passed
Hoping I could tell the moon before he was too tired
As I ran outside
Just as the sun departed
I saw the universe collide as the colours of the world came into focus
The pinks reminded me of your lips
The orange of your warmth
The blues of the waters we’d swam in
The purples of the evening sky we loved so much
As the colours mixed I saw you
And as they cleared all that was left was black and blinding lights
The black reminded me of your favourite colour
I climbed up and sat on the roof to get a better look
In some twisted way I wanted to feel closer to you
The stars spoke to me, I spoke back
I laughed with them at the fact that they had their sun and I had mine
