Dance of shadow and ice pellets

small white stones fall
rattling to the ground
a shadow keeps pace beside me
through the groaning night
now threading through dormant trees
now sliding on gathering stones
under the street lamp it slips unseen
into my boot prints
then runs ahead like a playful child
into nebulous dark
