Bad Day

For those of us who really need to rethink some things

When the walls around you trap you in
And your food is being drugged,
When you’re being watched and followed
And your phones have all been bugged,
When airport stewards check your
License, they are checking where you’ve flown,
So that they will all be notified
Whenever you leave home,
When you bury secrets in the yard
So no one else will know
What you have been doing
Or what sort of debt you owe,
When you keep a flask on hand
To keep the poisoners away
And you stop taking medication
To keep the dirty shrinks at bay,
And you keep a gun on hand
Because you know that you’re in danger,
And a child asks you a question;
(A child, or deadly stranger?)
And you shoot until the voices in your head
Have all gone quiet,
And with gun in hand you face
The angry consequential riot,
And you laugh as you are taken
To a place where heroes go
When they have fought the good fight bravely
And are locked up for what they know,
When they drug you up and shut you up
And lock you in a room
Where you sit in watchful silence
And await your unjust doom,
You’re having one hell of a bad day.

(2013)

What compels us to do what we do and think what we think? I asked myself that question every time I opened a newspaper, which is why I no longer read newspapers. And I probably will never have an answer to that question. This is about the closest I can get.
