Contemplations

For Charlotte

Maybe I ask myself
Far too many questions.
Maybe my expectations
Are ridiculously high.
Maybe I sit around
And wonder just a little bit
Too much about the state of mind
Between the earth and sky.
When I look up at the starry sky
I wonder what I’m worth;
Or whether there is really
A place I can call home.
I wonder if I’m nothing,
Or if we are all just flying
On this asteroid together
Yet so very much alone.
I wonder why innocents suffer
Or why the good die young
Or why the people of the world
Never help each other out.
I wonder why we fight our wars
Or use our words to inflict pain
Or murder, burn and destroy
Or how not to live in doubt.
I wonder why we let all our
Emotions take control,
Our anger and our fear
Cloud our eyes until we can’t see.
I wonder if there is a god,
And if he even cares
That the people he created
Are worse off than we should be.
But then I see my daughter,
So young and uncorrupted,
So beautiful and carefree,
Smiling like the summer sun,
And I can feel my heart weep
With the simple joy of knowing her,
And the hope she brings us all:
For her wondering has just begun.
