Only You

For Sarah, who has plastered a permanent portrait of her beautiful face on the back of my eternally grateful eye lids.

If I was a photograph,
Faded corners twisting,
Memories frozen
In unblinking stillness,
Surely you,
With such melody in your soul,
Such song in your eyes,
Would be a straining note
In a love song, to which
The voices of our hearts
Sing in perfect harmony.
If I was a river,
Wandering down ancient pathways,
Winding past unknown turns
In my constant search for
A finite ocean,
Surely you,
With your laughter
Welcoming me, enveloping me
With loving tenderness,
Would be a glimmering lake,
Shining in the sunlight,
A home for a previously
Homeless heart.
If I was a seedling,
Small and defenseless,
A child among giants,
Unknowing and carefree,
Surely you,
With your grounded wisdom,
With your nurturing fertility,
Would be the earth,
Encompassing me,
Allowing me a foundation
Upon which to grow.
If I was a music box,
Gears longing to be wound,
Longing to be heard,
Their silent secret hidden,
Surely you,
With your knowing heart,
Your guided purpose,
Would be the glittering key
That I had been awaiting
To allow me to play
To my fullest potential.
If I was a star,
Lonely, yet surrounded by so many,
Shining brightly in assumed vain
To an unseeing audience,
Surely you,
With your unyielding radiance,
Reflected from that goddess of stars,
That queen of the sky
Whose beauty you so rival,
Would be the light
That allowed me to be seen.
If I was a word,
Only a single note upon a page,
Barely more than meaningless
In my simplicity,
You would be the story
That gave me purpose
And gave me a new world
To explore.
If I was a warrior,
Stout of heart,
Quick of emotion,
Battling for supremacy,
Surely you,
With your supporting encouragement,
Your steadfast admiration,
Would be the sturdy shield
Behind which
I could take shelter
And find a moment
Of tranquility.
If I were a prayer,
Whispered softly,
In desperate earnest,
In such dire need
As would surely come
Of such an act of contrition,
Surely you,
With your blinding wonder,
Your unrivaled splendor,
Would own the ears
That would hear
Such hopeless words,
And give them a new reason
To believe.
