In the solace of surrender
In the cease fire of a war
Come the willing to commend
To some distant place afar

Though the thinking of warriors
Is to gain victory not defeat
When the battles are thus over
As the marching of the feet

With a thousand pages written
Each a hundred words or more
If the will is still unbroken
What difference is the score

For some live out their lives
In a world of black and white
Ne’er willing to surrender
In their battle to be right

There are others in our world
Where colors are more subdued
Where a gray is their vision
And judgement seldom used

Let tolerance be a breast plate
And patience be a sword
And vigilance is the watchword
Lest pride we walk on toward

For all are God’s children
And none are more than some
And all will fight their battles
Until our stay is done

Then the Savior leads the sleeping
Like a shepherd leads the sheep
To the light of many colors
With no score for us to keep

With the pen these words are finished
And these thoughts have said it all
Are we now ready to surrender
Or do we hear the battle call
