Phosphenes

Phosphenes - the perception of light without there being any present

Close your eyes.
Have you ever noticed the harder you squeeze
the more pronounced those chemical lines dance?
Little iridescent worms wriggling -
the bacteria that lives on everyone’s eyelashes.
Or an asteroid shower
A spark from a lighter is brighter than the sun, did you know?

shut again
real tight
burn
flicker
trippy

Tighter still and the embers turn to beetle green
or oil spilled on hot tarmac .
An undeveloped film in your mother’s wardrobe
that you hold up to the light in search for a familiar face.
An incandescent camera flash.

Exposed
Disclosed
Can’t count sheep at a discotheque.
