The Rainbow, by Jean-François Millet
Antonio Machado

Clouds Ripped Open

Clouds ripped open; a rainbow
gleaming already in the sky,
the fields entirely folded inside
the glass bowl of rain and sunlight.

I woke up. Who is clouding
the magic windowpanes of my dream?
My heart beat
astonished and upset.

The flowering lemon tree,
the cypress in rows in the garden,
the green field, the sun, the water, the rainbow!
drops of water in your hair...!

And it all vanished back into the memory
like a soap bubble in the wind.
