Love Deferred

If mercy were an angel’s breath,
And sorrow not all that was left;
If deep inside there could be hope–
In something more than just today.
If Truth could really be obtained,
And Love was something pre-ordained;
If that which mattered most was not–
That which threw it all away.

If I could have looked back and seen,
A lifetime ago, a shattered dream;
Would I have made the same mistake–
As I made the time before?
But what’s the point; the dream is slain,
And the only hope is pain;
What matters is the dream we shared–
And in that sharing became more.
