I See You

I see you, smiling down at me,
From the top of the tallest tree,
Scaling branches like baby steps,
To find a place where you can finally breathe.
The earth shrinks and falls from you,
Leaving nothing but the sky you’re due,
Taking you where I cannot reach,
Past the top of the tallest tree.

I see you, waving back at me,
From the house at the end of the street,
At a window glowing soft as snow,
Hung like lights over Christmas Eve.
Every second, and every step,
Holds the shape of your silhouette,
A friend guiding the way for me,
Forever waiting at the end of the street.

I see you, calling out to me,
Face turned into the ocean breeze,
Set to break from these aching shores,
And chart a course t’ward calmer seas.
You fill your lungs with hymn and hope,
And turn your back on this broken coast,
Strewn with stories and the friends you keep,
To save your song upon the ocean breeze.

I see you now, as I cannot be,
Soaring skyward and finally free,
Through the thunder and the weight of rain,
To claim the sky and your rightful seat.
We give our thanks to that endless night,
That gave us loan of its brightest light,
A star burning ‘cross all we see,
Homeward bound and finally free.
