The doctor’s eyes found the floor
And with a voice thickened and tight
Announced to me what I had already known
You have cancer and will need treatment soon
There were three of us in that room
Yet I felt so very much alone

Medicine has come a long way
Since your father’s death a while ago
We have miracle machines that will burn away
Those cancer cells that went astray
And you’ll come out feeling fine
In no time
So began the worst year of my life
Indeed the chemo and proton beams
Aimed so carefully right
Did indeed win the fight
Yet they burned more than they thought
My immortality that I had so easily bought
Left forever without a backward glance
Now I live
Cancer free
