A Year in Our Life

for my wife, lover, and champion,
oh, my beloved Phoenix, may you live forever

So, we have come then, you and I,
to a day when the sky is like an ocean,
and the rain tick/tick/ticks on the rail,
marking time like a clock.
We can have two experiences of this day:
the bleak and cold one of a year gone,
outside where the brutality has driven
all the birds from all the trees;
or the warm one inside,
with a cat on the lap and a book in hand,
where we celebrate another year of achievement,
of the honour of becoming who we are,
of the surprise and joy of love and faithfulness,
of cuddles on the soft cover on the bed,
of creativity and speaking of the things
that lift us up and fighting the ones
that would drag us down.
So yes, we have come to this day,
and I will be celebrating again,
every moment, that stacks up like bricks
to make another year in which
we can treasure this transitory life we’ve built,
all the moments, like bricks, that
make up this house which is our life.
