This Day

The old one’s dying/the baby’s already crying
There’s blood on the sheets
from both/clean it up/move along
It’s the same/this day/as all days
Sloughing off the sheets/stumbling for coffee
hoping it’s a good book/ taking a good look
joining the traffic/hiding from the sun
sheltering from the rain/an interim arrival
at a strange destination/somehow familiar
     —pivoting—
to a new place/as if it was always so.

This day/breaking like a  gateway
gnashing teeth/dying in strife
glancing back/looking forwards
two-faced Janus of uncertain identity
a dichotomy of hope and frustration
     —a hinge—
on an old book closing/newly opening
justifies nothing but Kingfisher
hunting/kookaburra crying
pursing your lips or smiling/it’s all the same
Say g’day to the new/same as the old
unless we’re reborn as engineers.
