A disquieting 4th

What sounded like
all the fireworks on earth
over the holiday weekend
couldn’t assuage my dread
at the memory of
an insurrectionist mob
swarming the U.S. Capitol
And the horrible notion
that far too many of them
would gladly return there
if summoned forth again
eats away at me still.
