Lost to the craziness

Someone who steals a car
and drives it down a city street
at speeds not safe for the highway
and kills an innocent person
two blocks from her own home
simply must be held accountable
for their crimes.

But when that criminal
is not apprehended
they are empowered to commit
even more brazen acts
in the future.

The collateral damage
and resultant grieving
by those left behind
in the wake of these crimes
is a festering issue that we
as a society
must earnestly confront.

But have we the will to do so?
With our planet in peril
and our democracy hanging
by a thread
can anarchy in the streets
be too far behind?

The answer to this question
is not at all clear,
but the solution is the same
as it always has been:

LOVE EACH OTHER

Especially when
that seems impossible
because that’s when
it’s most necessary.
