As I was growing up
I envied other kids who had
what I thought were “normal”
middle names:
James, Thomas, and
the other Christian saints.
I was always self-conscious
about my own middle name,
partly because it’s difficult to spell
with that silent letter “l” lurking near the end.
But now that I understand
what Abraham Lincoln stood for
and how he changed America forever
by righting its greatest wrong,
there’s no other middle name
I’d rather carry through life.
