Farewell to the Cape

For nearly 20 years my family and I
Visited the Outer Cape in Massachusetts.
Wellfleet, to be exact.
And it relaxed me in a way that
nothing else could ever do.

We were able to do this
by virtue of the generosity
Of my wife’s cousins
who owned a house where
we could stay at for an entire week
Without having to pay.

The rental cost would have made
A week like this unaffordable otherwise
And I’ll be forever grateful for
all the memories that were created
over the many times we went there.

But the house is being sold because
Nothing in life lasts forever
And change can come quickly
When you only wish that
it would never come at all.

Will I ever visit the Cape again
Now that my kids are grown
and a week to begin Summer vacation
isn’t on the agenda anymore?
I’ll have to say it’s very doubtful.

But like the Cat in the Hat once advised
“Don’t be sad it’s over;
be glad that it happened.”

There will be other summers ahead
and I’m sure there will be good times
and laughter, and happy memories created
Just as there were on the Cape.

And I’m looking forward to them already.
