Hardly Unfair

When a person achieves fame
and then handles it
by resorting to drugs and alcohol
in prodigious amounts,
they’re actively trying to
piss away a life which
they’re very fortunate to have.

Thankfully, the capacity
for recovery exists
and we should all
celebrate this whenever
it takes place.

But please,
in the name of anyone
who has fallen into addiction’s grip
without the resources to
pull themselves out,
don’t call the loss
of someone who has
overcome their addictions
“unfair.”

Call it tragic, which it is.
Call it heartbreaking, since that’s
accurate, too.

But “unfair”?
No way.
And it’s insulting
to suggest otherwise.
