Rebuke

As one who was rebuked I stood
In silence by the sea ;
The stars were pale and faint—a brood
Of angel eyes to me:

The dim red flush of evening lay
Like rose leaves in the west,
And fishing boats slept in the bay
Like weary birds at rest.

As one who was rebuked I stood
In wonder by the sea ;
And in the beauty, lo! I could
Attain Serenity!
