My Words

I honestly don't remember writing this

Freedom, liberalism, to be free
To be accepted, not judged, to be me
I dotted these ideals down on a page
I recited them for an audience on a stage
Each time believing more and more
Each time becoming ever so sure
This was all I’d ever want, ever need
To be accepted, just to be totally freed

I started writing poems about my ideals
Making sure each one of them appeals
To someone, to a few, to everyone, to most
I reached for a part of humanity seemingly lost
I read my ideals to myself every lonely night
Then I passed them on, it was only right
I could see approval of the listening crowd
My thoughts finally read out loud

Not yet, I’m not yet strong enough to recite
For now, I will write and I will rewrite
I will live out my ideals only in my head
I will remain safely posted in my stead
It will eat at me, but I will resist
I will hold back, it will persist
But I will fight it until I’m fine
For now my words are mine, only mine
