If only I had known then how strong you were.

If I could have
wrapped you
in the arms of god
I would have
to protect you
from angry words.
From gusts sent by
men to wreck flesh.
From danger in
shadows. But that
wouldn’t have
prevented any contusion
of skin or soul
or learning heart.
Only on your own path
could you find your feet.
