The Island

The island stands alone in virgin silence
Its rugged vistas pleasing to the eye
Its ocean girdled slopes untouched by violence
Sleep peacefully beneath an azure sky

The forests range unchecked with verdant bounty
The vivid patchwork meadows here grow free
And over all the mountains tower proudly
Their peaks stare condescending out to sea

The years send empires plunging to oblivion
Strong nations under time’s great weight will cry
But time on this far isle holds no dominion
The centuries like clouds have passed it by
