Sirius

Dog days ascend and there are miles between us.
Falling into age inside the distance, we list
Where the sea distributes shell-shatter and salt-wood
Divinity, carried by the limp shapes of drifters.

In the water we are beautiful, and sometimes
I feel a piece of me inside you, far away,
Outside reason, risen between the sand bars
As our hair flowers like an oil spill, eyes closed.

And there the coloured things glow and touch lips with light
That travelled all of time to reach us, and that must
Mean something, but our skulls are too opaque, and our
Bodies too distant; too close to the water -

The water where we are beautiful.
