All Bundled Up

"The part of you that knows who you are wants you to walk alone and listen to no one else but yourself.”
Anonymous

All bundled up; for it’s cold and windy
But despite the layers, my chin shivers
There’s tears in my eyes, I could barely see
Wish I were with you, under the covers!
It’s the price for wanting to be healthy
Although often I feel just the reverse
On arctic mornings when roads are empty
Lonely, I labor in my universe!

Ahead of me, my dear, just one more mile
In the horizon, I could see the sun
It should be warmer in a little while
Another lovely day will have begun
And home soon I’ll be, there to see your smile
To sooth all my aches, my fatigue undone
At the threshold you wait, your usual style
Welcome me from the cold, my troubles gone

But right now, time to burn more calories;
Whip this tired old body back into shape,
So the air in the spare tire will decrease
Till I look like Batman without a cape!
The odds for a longer life should increase
If e’er I follow the tale of the tape!

All bundled up; so I sweat like a hog
Even though the air’s wintry, this early
Every breath a mist lost in the thick fog
And every step depletes the energy
But then only one more mile I must log
In your arms I’ll be, so I must hurry!

Six years ago, I used to walk a lot – up to 15 miles a day in a valiant effort to lose weight and be healthier. Be it summer or winter. Then I stopped; to my regrets. I have started again, waking up at 5AM walking for three hours, then walking again for two hours at night.

I wrote this poem at that time. A whimsical playful poem. To my wife’s amusement.
